The 100 Waterfalls Trek, Homestay, and Kayaking the Nam Ou River
3 Days | Adventure: Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw and Back
Day 01 Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw with Lao Leu Village and Patok Cave Visit (L,D)
Meet your Tiger Trail guide in Luang Prabang and enjoy a scenic 3-hour drive winding along the Nam Ou River to the small town of Nong Khiaw. Along the way we’ll stop for a visit at Ban Na Nyang, a Lao Leu village known for its unusual Lao Leu traditional style houses and handicrafts.
Arrive in Nong Khiaw in the afternoon and have time to explore the small town, visit the easily accessible Patok Cave that was used as a head quarters by the Pathet Lao communist command during the War as well as a shelter for villagers during American bombing runs, and have some local food with your guide.
You’ll overnight in a guest house near the Nam Ou River surrounded by jungle-covered mountains.
Day 02 Kayaking the Nam Ou River, 100 Waterfall Trek, and Riverside Homestay (B,L,D)
Grab your gear and get ready as we set out on a full day of active adventure. We’ll kayak down the Nam Ou River (about 14 Km) to a riverside Khmu village where we’ll find the trailhead of the famous 100 Waterfall trek, discovered by Tiger Trail. This is an exciting hike up through hundreds of cascading waterfalls surrounded by beautiful jungle. You’ll want to bring shoes that can get wet as we hike up and through the waterfall itself. Enjoy lunch at the waterfall and return mid-afternoon. The trek is as much a feature as the waterfalls.
Upon returning to the river, we’ll board a local boat to transfer 7 Km downriver. Overnight at a beautiful riverside Khmu village and experience traditional Laotian hill tribe life surrounded by beautiful mountains and nature.
A backup boat is available all day and required in order to transport your kayaks back to Nong Khiaw.
Day 03 Kayak Nam Our River and Return Drive to Luang Prabang (B,L)
Wake to breakfast prepared by your guide then set out in the morning hours for our final day of easy kayaking about 16 km down a beautiful stretch of the Nam Ou River. Take lunch on the riverbanks.
Finish kayaking to meet our Tiger Trail truck for return transfer to Luang Prabang.
Note: You may store your main luggage at our Tiger Trail main office for the duration of the tour. You’ll need only to take the gear and clothing you’ll need on this 3-day adventure.
