Day 01 Fishing on the Nam Ou by Long Boat (L)

You’ll be introduced to traditional fishing techniques and equipment, including nets, traps, spear guns, and goggles, all essential tools used by local fishermen on a daily basis.

Once familiarized with the fishing techniques, you’ll embark on a captivating upstream journey by long boat, in search of idyllic spots to put your newly acquired skills to the test. The Nam Ou River offers a plethora of picturesque and tranquil locations, each waiting to be explored and enjoyed. Discover hidden gems such as serene beaches, providing both natural shade and an ideal setting for your fishing endeavors.

Approximately an hour before lunchtime, your knowledgeable guide will build a small fire, gather large bamboo to serve as cooking vessels, and select smaller bamboo for utensils and cooking implements. Witness the art of traditional Lao cooking as your guide demonstrates how locals prepare meals when away from home. Your delectable lunch will consist of grilled fish, Som Phakat (fermented Lao vegetables), Oulam (a traditional stew), assorted side dishes, and sticky rice cooked inside bamboo over the open fire.

After indulging in this flavorsome feast, your journey continues downstream, allowing you to further explore the river’s enchanting surroundings. Along the way, you’ll encounter fellow fishermen utilizing the same techniques you have just learned, showcasing the vibrant fishing culture of the region.
